I knew this property long before I owned it. After an oil spill in the basement, an insurance claim paid for a new foundation, and our family's concrete company built it. I worked on that foundation myself. When the property came up for sale a few years later, I knew the foundation was sound and nearly new, so I bought it, took the old house down, and designed a new home to sit on top of it: two storeys, about 3,200 square feet, with a two-bay garage. Most teardowns start with guesswork about what's in the ground. On this one, we already knew.
