The owners had walked the land for three summers before they called us. They knew where the morning light landed, where the deer crossed, and which rise had a view to the river. Most of our first phase was confirming what they already understood — and finding the four or five places where the land disagreed with the plan.
The principal residence sits low on the brow of the hill, oriented to the southeast so the kitchen catches the early sun and the great room frames the bend in the river. The shop is set back into the cedar line, intentionally separate, accessible by a gravel spur that runs behind the planting beds. The guest cottage is a half-acre's walk away, behind a windbreak of mature white spruce — close enough to share a meal, far enough to keep its own quiet.
