The Hayfield — working shop and barn on a winter township road

Project No. 05 The Hayfield.

Township Northumberland, ON
Scope Working shop + caretaker's residence
Land 100 acres · hayfield + cedar bush
Completed 2022

A working shop, equipment storage, and a small caretaker's residence on a hundred-acre hayfield. Built to be used hard for fifty years.

Notes from the build

A shop is a different kind of luxury.

The owner had a primary house an hour south. What he wanted on the Northumberland land was a place to work — a shop big enough for a tractor, a wood lathe, two pickups, and the small kit he uses to maintain a herd of beef cattle on the back hundred acres. The caretaker's residence sits behind the shop, oriented north so the windows face the field, not the gravel apron.

Steel-framed shop, post-and-beam outbuilding, full radiant slab. Three roll-up doors instead of two — the owner didn't want to wait. The mechanical room is oversized by half on purpose: when the next system fails, there's room to add it without tearing out the existing one.

The build took fourteen months. Half a year of that was waiting for the township to approve the access drive. We learned more about Northumberland Class-A road allowance in those six months than most builders learn in a career.
