The Stoney Lake — timber-framed great room with stone fireplace and lake view

Project No. 06 The Stoney Lake.

Township Prince Edward County, ON
Scope Primary residence + boathouse
Land 4 acres · 280' granite shoreline
Completed 2023

A primary residence on a granite shoreline. Timber framing, board-formed concrete, and three seasons of cedar to finish. One owner, one architect, one trades roster from the first walk to the last walk-through.

Notes from the build

Built into the rock, not on top of it.

The footprint is set six feet back from the natural drop to the water — Prince Edward County code wanted ten, the township engineer wanted twelve, and we ended up with eight after a quiet conversation about the bedrock the engineer hadn't actually walked. The owner wanted the south wall to feel like it was leaning out over the lake; we built the south wall by hand, twice, until it did.

Timber frame from a southern Ontario barn-wright. Board-formed concrete on the lower level, cast in place against rough cedar planks the trades milled from the property's own windfalls. The roof is a hand-laid copper standing seam — three months of work, expected to outlast everyone on site.

Eighteen months on site. The architect drove from Toronto every other Friday. The owners came up most weekends. By the end, every trade on the project knew which week's site walk would have which questions.
